カンマ(comma)

カンマ”,” は、文章の中で意味の切れ目を示すものです。英文を作成する場合、無ければ非常に困りますが、多く使いすぎるのも読みにくい文章になってしまいます。どのように使えばよいか、具体的に見ていきましょう。

1.語句を列挙する

/ 2つの語句を並べる場合は、”A and B” や”A or B” とすればいいですが、3つ以上の語句を並べる場合は、カンマ”,” を用います。”A, B, C and D” や”A,B,C or D” のようにします。切れ目がわかりにくい場合は、接続詞”and”や”or” の前にカンマを置いて、”A, B, C, and D” や”A,B,C, or D” のようにします。

○ My wife bought apples, oranges, and kiwis at the store.
   「家内は、その店でリンゴとオレンジ、そしてキウイを買いました。」

○ ◎ The convenience store sells milk, soft drinks, beer and wine.
  ○ The convenience store sells milk, soft drinks, beer, and wine.
  × The convenience store sells milk and soft drinks and beer and wine.

○ ◎ The town meeting will be held in Tokyo, Nagoya or Osaka.
  ○ The town meeting will be held in Tokyo, Nagoya,or Osaka.

/ 幾つかの語がひと塊になっている名詞句の場合は、名詞句であることを明確にするために、接続詞の前にカンマを入れたほうが読みやすいです。

○ ◎ She had bread, coffee, and ham and eggs for breakfast.
  ○ She had bread, coffee and ham and eggs for breakfast.

 

2.”and” や”but” などの等位接続詞の前

/ 独立した節と節とを、”but” や”and”、”or” どの等位接続詞を用いてつなげる場合には、カンマを置きます。但し、短い文の場合はつけなくても問題ありません。

○ I talked to Satoshi at a wedding party, and he turned out to be stupid.
   「私は結婚パーティーでサトシと話をしました、そして、彼はばかであることがわかりました。」

○ ○ The letter was sent, but she hasn’t responded.
  ○ The letter was sent but she hasn’t responded.

/ 接続詞に続く節で、前の節の主語を流用して省略する場合は、カンマを入れません。

○ ○ I had to move to New York, or I had to find another job.
  ○ I had to move to New York or find another job.

/ 文頭に”and” や“but”、”so” を置く場合、その後にカンマは入れません。

○ ○ And there’s another reason we feel our product is the best on the market.
  × And, there’s another reason we feel our product is the best on the market.

 

3.”because” や”when”、”if” などの接続詞

/ ”because” や”when”、”if” などの接続詞を用いた従属節を文の後半に置く場合、接続詞の前にカンマは置かない方がいいです。

○ ○ He can’t attend the meeting because he will be in Chicago on that day.
  △ He can’t attend the meeting, because he will be in Chicago on that day.

/ 逆に従属節を文の前半に置く場合は、従属節の終わりにカンマを置きます。但し、従属節は後置する方が読みやすくなります。

○ ○ When you arrive at the station, please give me a call.
  × When you arrive at the station, please give me a call.
  ◎ Please give me a call when you arrive at the station.

 

4.主文の前に前置きとして語句を置く場合

/ 主文の前に、文頭に前置きとして語句を置く場合は、カンマを用います。

○ By August 10, 2019, we have to make a proposal for a new facility.
  「2019年8月10日までに、我々は新しい設備についての稟議書作成しなければなりません。」

/ 前置する句が短く、かつ後にくる文が長くない場合は、カンマを省くことがあります。但し、その語句が強行されるのを避けたい場合は、カンマを省いて後置するのが最も適切です。

○ ○ In August, he will visit to Japan.
  ○ In August he will visit to Japan.
  ◎ He will visit to Japan in August.

 

5. 形容詞を重ねる場合

/ 形容詞を重ねて名詞を修飾する場合は、カンマで区切ります。カンマの代わりに”and” も使えますが、カンマと接続詞とを同時には、用いません。

○ ○ She is a pretty, intelligent girl.
  ○ She is a pretty and intelligent girl.
  × She is a pretty, and intelligent girl.

/ 但し、”形容詞 + 名詞” で一つの名詞句として認識される場合は、その前に置かれる形容詞は、名詞句を修飾していると考えられることより、カンマは用いません。

○ ○ We have just one small technical issue.
  × We have just one small, technical issue.

 

6.引用文の導入

/ 引用文を導入する場合、特に引用文が長い場合を除いて、カンマを用います。長い引用の場合はコロンを用います。また、引用文が短い場合は、カンマを省くこともあります。

○ ○ His reply to my offer was,  “I need to discuss it with my boss.”
  ○ His reply to my offer was  “I need to discuss it with my boss.”
  × His reply to my offer was:  “I need to discuss it with my boss.”

/ 文の一部だけを引用する場合は、前にカンマを置きません。

○ ○ Mr. Brown said that we needed more time “to review all our options”.
  × Mr. Brown said that we needed more time,  “to review all our options”.

 

7.日付

/ 日付を書く場合、日と年との間をカンマで区切ります。月と年との間にはカンマを置きません。

○ ○ I started working for him on August 15, 2012.
  ○ I joined this company in August 2012.
  × I joined this company in August, 2012.

 

8.住所・地名

/ 住所は、番地、丁目、町名、市 … のように小さい区分から書き始めます。郵便番号を除いてカンマで区切ります。

○ My address is Rejion 309, 3-6-2, Teraikedai, Settu, Hyogo 653-0096.

/ 文中で、県と市や、州と市 などを記述する場合、より小さい区分の方を先に記載して、カンマを置きます。

○ I will move to Sayo, Hyogo next month.

 

9.数字の桁の区切り

/ 4けた以上の数字では、3桁ごとにカンマを入れます。(最近の理系の本では、3桁ごとに半角スペースを空けるようになっています。) また、小数点以下の数字は4けた以上でもカンマで区切ることはありません。

○ 4,786,908 shares
○ a total of $6,908,500

/ 但し、番地やページ、西暦などを記述する場合は、カンマを用いません。

○ ○ 45793 Samaritan Way
  × 45,793 Samaritan Way

○ ○ page 1673
  × page 1,673

○ ○ He was born in 1263.
  × He was born in 1,263.

 

10.肩書や年齢、人名

/ 職業や、学位、称号、その他の肩書を人名の後に続けて書く場合、カンマを置きます。

○ David Thayne, Ph.D was on the panel.

/ ラストネームを先に書く場合、カンマを用います。

○ Thayne, David
○ Higuchi, Ryutaro

/ 人名の後に年齢を続ける場合もカンマを置きます。カンマも代わりに丸かっこを用いる場合もありますが、カンマの方が好まれるとされています。

○ ○ Fred Johonson, 66 , will be retiring this month.
  △ Fred Johonson (66)  will be retiring this month.

 

11.手紙の起句、結句

/ “Dear …” のような手紙の起句(salutation) にはカンマを付けます。アメリカ英語ではビジネスレターの場合コロンを用います。それによりフォーマル度が上がるそうです。
 “Sincerely” などの結句(complimentary close) にもカンマを付けます。

○ ○ Dear Mike,
  ○ Dear Mr. Smith,
  ○ Dear Mr. President: (アメリカ英語、フォーマル)

○ ○ Sincerely,
  ○ Yours truly,

 

12.呼びかけ

/ 人名を、主語や目的語としてではなく、呼びかけ表現(vocative) として文中に置く場合は、カンマで区切ります。

○ ○ Hi, Paul.
  × Hi Paul.

 

13.等位構造の文を並列するときの”and” の代替

/ 同じような構造の文を並列する場合、カンマを用いて”and” を省いた表現が可能です。

○ ○ She paid for drinks and I paid for dinner.
  ○ She paid for drinks, I paid for dinner.
    (嫌味な奴だね)

 

14.”so ~ that …” 構文で、”that” の代わりにカンマを用いることが出来ます。

○ ○ I was so busy that I did’t stop for lunch.
  ○ I was so busy, I did’t stop for lunch.
