冠詞の位置

冠詞の位置は、通常修飾する語の前につきます。

（１）冠詞 + 名詞：　”a boy”、”an apple” 、．．．

（２）冠詞 + 形容詞 + 名詞：　”a good day”、．．．

（３）冠詞 + 副詞 + 形容詞 + 名詞：　”a very bad girl”、．．．

１） “half a ( or the )”（半分の～）　：
“half a mile”（半マイル）、”half the distance”（その半分の距離）

２） “many a”（数々の～）　：　文語的です。
“many a year = many years”（多年）、”many a time = time and (time) again”（いくたびも）

○　Many a man has failed.
　　「多くの人が失敗しました。」

３） “all the”（すべての～、～は皆）：
“all the books”（全ての本）

○　The same rate is applied to all the employees.
　　「同一の基準が、すべての従業員に適用されます。」

４） “both the”（両方の～、～は両方とも）：
“both the sisters”（姉妹二人とも）

○　Both the parents are in good health.
　　「両親ともに健在です。」

５） “double the”（倍の～）：
“double the price”（倍の値段）

６） “such a”（こんな、そんな～）：
“such a [fine] view”（こんな（美しい）景色）

○　I am not such a fool as to believe that.
　　「それを信じるほど（そんな）馬鹿では無い。」

７） “what a”（なんと～）：
“what a [fine] view”（何という（美しい）景色）

１） “how … a”：
“how fine a view”（何たる美しい景色）

２） “too … a”：
“too fine a view”（とても美しい景色）

３） “as … a … [as]”：
“as fine a view as that”（それに劣らぬ美しい景色）

４） “so … a … [as]”：
“so fine a view as that”（そんなに美しい景色）

１） “rather a …”：
“rather a warm place”（少し暖かい場所）

２） “quite a ( or the ）”：
“quite a warm place”（まったく暖かい場所）

３） “only a”：
“only a warm place”（暖かい場所に過ぎない）

　→　”only” が形容詞の場合、”the only warm place”（唯一の暖かい場所）のようになります。

○ I visited the scientist and poet.
　　「私は科学者でもあり詩人でもある人を訪問しました。」

○　I visited the scientist and the poet.
　　「私はその科学者とその詩人とを訪問しました。」

形容詞が付く場合も同じです。

○　She keeps a white and brown cat.
　　「彼女は白と茶色の混じった猫を飼っています。」（猫は1匹）

○　She keeps a white and a brown cat.
　　「彼女は白い猫と茶色の猫とを飼っています。」（猫は2匹）

(a) 但し、省略しても明瞭で紛らわしくない場合はこの原則はよく無視されます。

○　I greeted a lady and gentleman.
　　「私はあるご婦人と紳士とに挨拶をしました。」

(b) 2つ以上の名詞が一組になって用いられる場合、冠詞は初めの語にのみ付けられます。

“a cup and saucer”（お皿つきの茶碗）、”the bride and groom”（新郎新婦）
